Midway: Fall/Winter Season
The Monroe St. Midway is a dynamic 2-acre public space placemaking project situated in the heart of downtown Detroit on the proposed site of the Development at Cadillac Square, formerly known as Monroe Blocks. This project emerged from a unique opportunity to temporarily activate the space after a 3-year construction pause, transforming it into a vibrant, year-round hub dedicated to celebrating Detroit's rich contemporary culture + arts scene in an inclusive + equitable way.
After 2 successful spring/summer seasons, we launched our inaugural winter activation in 2022— complete with two cozy indoor spaces, an arcade, ice bumper cars, and an 80 foot snow tube hill.

The strategy was to create a dynamic space that could be seamlessly transitioned from the existing infrastructure in-place from prior seasons, with the continued mission of celebrating Detroit's cultural diversity, offering a wide range of activities, art installations, and experiences. From Apres Ski festivals to enchanting winter wonderlands, the Monroe St. Midway drew inspiration to make it “cool to be cold.”

The Midway has transformed a formerly inactive and vacant space into a hub of cultural activity, enriching the lives of local residents and drawing visitors from across the region. By featuring local artists, supporting local businesses, and engaging the community in various events, programs, and festivities, the project has played a significant role in preserving and promoting Detroit's cultural heritage. Ultimately, the Midway has continued to contribute to the renaissance of downtown Detroit and demonstrated the power of community-driven placemaking.
